HARRIET TUBMAN ELEMENTARY - ST. CATHARINES

A two storey 58,000 square ft (5355 sq. m) structure Located in central St. Catharines, Harriet Tubman is a brand new elementary school that was built on the former Alexandra school site. This school was built to accommodate students from 4 schools that were consolidated into one, Alexandra Memorial, Maywood and Queen Mary.

The existing Alexandra school was kept in operation during the construction of the new school and the city owned Catherine Street Park was used as a playground during the construction of the new school.
The exterior of the school was constructed to reflect the character of the existing Alexander school however the interior of the school reflected modern design and colours. Inside, the feel is open, with bright windows, dropped ceilings, terrazzo flooring, and a library rotunda.
The school also features a double-sized elementary gym to be used by the community during off- school hours. Only Crossroads School in Niagara-on-the-Lake has an elementary school gym this size in the DSBN.
The construction of the school was primarily load bearing masonry for the walls, slab on grade for the ground floor and hollowcore precast for the second floor Meanwhile, its namesake Harriet Tubman has been immortalized in an outdoor bronze sculpture.
